NEW rules for housing benefit came into force this week.

In Kirklees the changes will affect about 1,000 people who live in private sector accommodation.

New claimants will now have their benefit paid directly to them rather than to their landlord.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet member for revenues and benefits, Clr Andrew Palfreeman, welcomed the move.

He said: “We still need proof of income, savings and circumstances, but the new rules should make it easier to work out the claim and make the payment.”
