CAMPAIGNERS will today push to keep the Yorkshire children’s heart unit open.

And they’re unveiling a plan which they hope will mean the Leeds-based unit, which serves Huddersfield, could be saved.

Those behind the Save Our Service campaign want the NHS Safe and Sustainable team to consider a further idea – Option E.

It comes as the Yorkshire Children’s Heart Unit is earmarked for closure with children in the region being treated in Newcastle or Liverpool.

They say Option E would “offer the optimum configuration of service” for children’s cardiology centres.

And the team behind the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) will take over the outside area of the Leeds City Museum at Millennium Square to highlight their campaign.

Joining them will be Linthwaite mother Gaynor Bearder, husband Antony and sons Lucas and Joel. Little Joel’s life was saved by the team at the heart unit.

Sam and Neil Pogson, also of Linthwaite, and their son Ben will also be there.

Speaking at the event will be the heart ward’s clinical psychologist, Sara Matley, from Edgerton.
