MUSLIM leaders have written to every mosque in Britain urging their congregations to help in the fight against terror.

And a Kirklees councillor is backing the appeal.

Yesterday's appeal came after eight men were arrested and half a ton of ammonium nitrate fertiliser - an ingredient of some terror bomb-making - was seized in London.

The Muslim Council of Britain asked Imams to be alert to any criminal activity within their communities.

There are 1.5m Muslims living in the UK and many fear a backlash.

Clr Shabir Pandor, who represents Batley West on Kirklees Council, said it was a Muslim's duty to speak out.

He said: "If there is anything we become aware of, it is our duty to ensure that this is reported immediately to the police.

"We will not tolerate terrorism and condemn all forms of illegal and unlawful activities."
