A CRACKDOWN on yobs is wanted in Holmfirth.

Residents are calling for more bobbies on the beat to tackle vandalism, graffiti, under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour.

And now local Tories are giving their backing.

Amanda Harland, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for the Colne Valley constituency, visited Holmfirth to examine the problems.

She was given a tour by Kirklees councillor Nigel Patrick and spoke to Holmfirth residents.

They say one of the worst areas for yobs is Victoria Park.

Residents say youths congregate in the park after dark and their presence is intimidating.

They also say noise from the park causes them sleepless nights .

Residents think an increased police presence would solve the problems.

Miss Harland said: "This used to be a problem that was associated with inner-city areas. But now we see under-age drinking, anti-social behaviour and mindless vandalism in market towns like Holmfirth.

Clr Patrick said: "Local residents deserve a better deal than they are getting.

"We will be pressing for a commitment from the police and Kirklees Council. I will be calling for a more visible police presence and for CCTV coverage to be extended to cover Victoria Park."

After her visit to Holmfirth - including a call at youth ``chill out" and internet venue Cafe 100 - Miss Harland said a minority of badly behaved youths were causing the problems.

She added: "Most of the young people in Holmfirth are as disgusted by this problem as we are.

"The trouble is down to a very small minority. If the offenders can be dealt with all the people of Holmfirth will benefit."
