AN new campaign to tempt tourists into Huddersfield is to be launched.

Discover Huddersfield is a community-led project which encourages people to explore the town centre in new and interesting ways.

And organisers of the project hope that it is just the start.

There has been criticism of the decision to close the Tourist Information Centre in Albion Street in the past.

But now officials of the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership hope to play a key role in attracting visitors, encouraging them to stay and offering things to do for local people.

Walking trails have been created by members of the public and will be shared through free trail maps and occasional guided walks.

The planned trails are

The Public Art Trail

The Shuddersfield Ghost Trail

The Real Ale Trail

The Heritage Trail

Now organisers are looking for volunteers to sign up to the project either as a volunteer tour guide or a pop-up stall volunteer.

Cathy Burger, of the Town Centre Partnership, said it is exciting news for the summer.

“We are launching the trails in early July and we want to bring a new vibrancy and a new life to the town centre.

“We have got funding from the High Street Innovation Fund and that will enable us produce leaflets which will be available to both visitors and local people.

“The ghost trail was premiered at last year’s Food and Drink festival and was very popular.

“We have teamed up with Welcome to Yorkshire on this project as one of the drawbacks was a lack of information for visitors about what to do.

“One reason for doing this is to let people know there is a lot to see and do in Huddersfield town centre.

“We don’t see Discover Huddersfield as just being about the trails. It is a portal to tempt people here and to encourage them to stay”.

The Discover Huddersfield trails will offer new ways to experience the town through guided walks, talks and trails.

The various trails will cover grand listed buildings and small independent shops; a place for radicals from the Luddites to the Sex Pistols; the birthplace of Rugby League; a Mecca for real ale and a town rich in creativity, stories, heritage and the odd ghostly encounter.

Other groups working on the Discover Huddersfield project include HCAN, Chol Theatre, Huddersfield Civic Society and Huddersfield Local History Society.
