VILLAGES in West Yorkshire are being urged to enter a new competition.

The Building Community Life contest is being run by the Yorkshire Rural Community Council as part of the Calor Village of the Year contest.

Last year, Shelley won the Yorkshire village and Northern Village titles.

The contest assessed communities on six aspects of life.

Categories were community life, business, young people, older people, the environment and - judged separately - information communication technology (ICT).

Shelley won regional prizes for community life, business, the environment and ICT.

Villagers were presented with framed certificates, a plaque and prize money totalling £3,500.

The Building Community Life competition has a £500 prize fund. The deadline for entries is Monday, April 25.

Doreen Berriman of the YRCC said: "The contest will get residents working together and encourage them to look at how people are being provided for.

"It's an opportunity to celebrate positive aspects of village life and to address issues or problems."

Information and entry forms are available from Ms Berriman on 01904 645271.
