COUNCILLORS are campaigning for a crossing on a stretch of road where a 10-year-old girl was struck by a car.

Lib Dems will hold a public meeting next week to demand a crossing on Manchester Road in Milnsbridge.

Charlotte Winter suffered serious head injuries when she was hit by a car at the traffic lights opposite the Horse and Groom last year.

Charlotte, who is now 11, was trying to get from Cowlersley Lane to a charity event at the pub when the accident happened last June 18.

Rather than using three pedestrian crossings between Cowlersley Lane, Manchester Road and Morley Lane, Charlotte took the direct route across Manchester Road – even though there was no crossing.

She was struck by Liam Moran, 34, who was driving at 40mph in the 30mph zone.

The college lecturer received a £650 fine and nine points on his licence at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court in November.

And now Clr Robert Iredale is campaigning for a pelican crossing to be installed at the chemist’s a few yards from the Horse and Groom traffic lights.

The Golcar Lib Dem said: “Charlotte’s father Dean is a prime mover in this, he was the person who first suggested it.

“We would like to see a crossing at the chemist’s as it would allow people to get there from the doctor’s on New Street.

“I’m told there have been other accidents at the traffic lights, so any kind of crossing which gives pedestrians the right of way would be preferable.”

Clr Iredale has called a public meeting about the issue at the Horse and Groom at 7pm on February 16.

He said: “I want people to come to the meeting to put forward ideas on where the crossing could be moved to and to get the input of Kirklees Council officers.

“I hope the meeting will be well attended.”

Clr Iredale will be joined at the meeting by fellow Lib Dems Clr Andrew Marchington and Clr Christine Iredale.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren will benefit from a new crossing in Elland.

Calderdale Council workers will begin work on the zebra crossing on Victoria Road next Saturday.

The new crossing near the junction with Recreation Lane will help children get to Brooksbank School and Cross Lane Junior and Infant School.

Calderdale decided to act after finding that cars often travel above the 30mph speed limit along the road.

Victoria Road will be closed between 7.30am and 5.30pm for a week. Buses will be re-routed during the work.
