FIREFIGHTERS have launched a scheme to help protect vulnerable people.

They are teaming up with health workers, council officials and other groups to make sure vulnerable people get the support they need.

When one of the groups visits someone, they can make a referral to another one that could provide them with help.

So a fire officer doing a home safety check may discover that the homeowner could benefit from energy efficiency advice and refer their details.

The scheme, called Hotspots, has been tested since April.

But it was officially launched at West Yorkshire Fire Service’s headquarters at Birkenshaw on Wednesday.

So far, it has helped 1,5000 households.

Chief Fire Officer Phil Toase said: “Many organisations visit people in their homes for a variety of reasons.

“Many of these people have complex needs.

“By simply working together we can all offer a far more comprehensive service.’’

He added: “It’s a one-stop service, without the need for repeated cold-calling or form-filling.”
