A LAMB and its mum saved from the slaughterhouse have been given a new home at an animal sanctuary.

Workers at Spenborough Abattoir in Liversedge defied red-tape last month when they refused to put the lamb down.

They appealed to officials after the animal was born unexpectedly at the abattoir as its mum waited to be killed.

Now the pair are enjoying freedom at an animal sanctuary in Frettenham, Norfolk.

The lamb - renamed from Larry to Larriet after staff realised he was a she - arrived last week with mum Irene.

One hundred other sheep live at the sanctuary and the latest arrivals are said to be putting on weight.

Workers at Spenborough Abattoir fought legislation which says animals cannot leave slaughterhouses alive.

A special licence allowing the pair to be moved was granted by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
