New homes could be built on an industrial site in Honley.

Rodgers Plant Hire has applied for outline permission for a new build estate on its site at Riverside Works.

The number of homes planned for the Woodhead Road site has not been revealed.

In the application, company owner Simon Rodgers says the eight workers employed there would not lose their jobs as the business would be relocated and could possibly expand.

He says the limitations of the awkward site have prevented the company from developing it for their own use and make it unsuitable for further industrial use.

Mr Rodgers was not available for comment to confirm where he hopes to move to the business to or if he has already sold up.

The Honley plan comes amid protests about a nearby proposal for 51 houses at Smithy Place, further south on Woodhead Road, close to Brockholes.

Clr Edgar Holroyd-Doveton, of the Holme Valley North Independents, said he preferred the sound of the Honley plan, although reserved judgement until details of the homes were revealed.

He said: “We have preference as a group that there should be much more use of brownfield sites for development than green field ones.

“We’re opposed to the housing development at Smithy Place, which is green field, as we want to maintain the integrity of Brockholes and Honley as villages.

“But building on old industrial sites is preferable. Obviously we want to retain industry, we’re not sure where this company would move to but if it’s not within Honley then we’d want it somewhere else in Kirklees.”

Documents submitted to Kirklees Council planners say the Rodgers Plant Hire premises would be pulled down and the design of any new homes would be in-keeping with the row of terrace housing adjacent.

The applicant suggests the loss of noise and disturbance from the commercial premises will be a positive for villagers.
