PLANNERS today approved two major developments in Huddersfield.

Councillors gave the green light for a new sports centre at Spring Grove Car Park in Springwood.

The state-of-the-art £36m development will replace the existing centre at Southgate.

Kirklees Council's Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee approved the plan this afternoon despite objections from Springwood residents.

The new sports centre is part of a major reorganisation of Huddersfield town centre which includes building a new Tesco at Southgate.

The sub-committee also gave West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust permission to build a children's hospice at Brackenhall.

Charity staff spoke of their delight after councillors unanimously backed the plan.
