New jobs have been promised at the first wine bar in a village.

Up to eight new positions could be created at the Millers’ Wine Bar in the centre of Milnsbridge on Market Street, which is due to open its doors to customers on October 16.

Owner Derek Day hopes that the bar, located between the Co-operative Pharmacy and a cafe will reignite the neighbourhood’s nightlife, which has being badly damaged in previous years by the closure of several pubs.

Derek, whose main day jobs are running a house clearance and maintenance service and tool stall at Huddersfield open market, said: “At the moment only the Four Horseshoes pub is open at night in the village centre so hopefully the bar will create a bigger buzz and good community atmosphere.

“I bought the building in 1998 and I’ve wanted to open a bar here for ages as something good for the community and chose the name Millers due to the amount of working mills that used to be in the village.

“I actually planned to start one in 2006 but unfortunately the recession came and put the plan on hold until now.

“In the meantime I’ve run a tool shop from the building, then it became home to Easy Fireplaces and from about 2011 it was home to an Asian restaurant but that closed.

“I’ve spent £30,000 on getting it up to scratch and we’re really happy with how it’s turned out.”

Derek’s son Chris, 28, will take care of the day to day running of the 120 sqm ground floor bar, which the pair hope to start serving food from in November.

“Chris is a physiotherapist but has experience in this sector and he’s got the bar already to go.

“He’ll be serving all sorts of drinks including real ale and he’s got a licence to play recorded music.

“We’ve got a team of four people ready to start but hope to employ more people, including a chef, from November.

“Chris is still working on the menu but he’ll be serving full bar meals and tapas-like bites.

“It’s a very exciting time, hopefully not just for us but for people who live here and we hope it will have a positive impact on the rest of the village.

“It will be for families during the day and in the evening it will offer people a relaxed place for adults.”

The bar will host an opening evening on October 16 from 7pm, which will include special drinks offers.
