POLICE have stepped up their bid for help to catch a robber who struck in Mirfield.

More details have emerged about the man who escaped with a large amount of cash after attacking a security guard outside the Co-op store at Huddersfield Road at 8.40am on Tuesday.

The guard, who was taking cash from the store to a security van, was sprayed in the face with some kind of substance.

The thief stole a money canister and ran towards the Lidl store. He then headed in the direction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal.

The security guard was shocked, but did not need hospital treatment.

Police have now revealed the robber was carrying a navy blue bag with lighter-coloured blue ends and a zip on top. It may be a Reebok Classic-type bag, with the Reebok motif in white.

Police want anyone who saw the fleeing raider to contact them.

They also think he may have staked out the store in the days leading up to the robbery.

The raider is about 6ft and he wore blue jeans, a black jacket and white trainers.

His black woollen hat was pulled down over the top half of his face and a black scarf was tied round lower half of face.
