PEOPLE have been urged to lock their doors and windows when gardening to thwart thieves.

The warning comes after a 90-year-old Fenay Bridge man fell victim to a sneak thief, who crept into his home through a conservatory while he was in the garden and stole his wallet.

Pc Dave McSweeney, of Huddersfield police, said: "These thieves are out and about. Lock doors and windows if you are working or sunbathing and out of sight of them."

He also said people were still leaving car keys on kitchen work surfaces and tables where thieves can see and steal them. They then drive off in the victim's car.

Pc McSweeney said: "If the thieves see a nice car they may peer into the kitchen to see if the keys are there. Hide the keys and take them upstairs at night."
