HUDDERSFIELD University is spending £5,000 on establishing a cultural and linguistic programme to support international and home students.

The Modern Languages Centre will use the money to create the Tandem Learning scheme.

The programme has just started and will run for two years.

It has been made possible by the completion of a £100,000 refurbishment of the centre.

Modern languages coordinator Dr Malcolm Pollard said: “The scheme is not just about learning a language.

“It offers opportunities for students alike to explore their cultural differences and learn from each others’ experience.

“The programme differs dramatically from learning a language as part of a degree course.

“The programme is open to all students and is free.

“A student will be provided with a partner and under the guidance of the university will meet regularly with the aim of developing friendships and a better understanding of the cultural, social, business and linguistic aspects of daily life.

“The potential for learning from the first-hand experience available will be useful whether for personal or professional reasons,” added Dr Pollard.
