THE grandeur of Huddersfield Town Hall could now be the setting for more weddings.

The town’s Register Office has been moved to the Victorian hall from its previous base in the Civic Centre.

Council officials hope more people will be tempted to use the new ceremonial room with its ornate plasterwork and ceilings.

And prospective couples and their families are being invited to see the new wedding facilities when they are unveiled on Tuesday.

The new-look Huddersfield Register Office is open in its new location in the former Members’ lounge at Huddersfield Town Hall following extensive refurbishment throughout the building. All this will be on show during the open day.

The refurbished ceremony room now complements the stylish and contemporary interior of the registration offices and will provide a beautiful and memorable setting for wedding ceremonies.

The open afternoon will offer the opportunity for people to see the new rooms as well as give an idea of what goes on behind the scenes.

The team of people who deliver the service will be taking tours around the building, with a 30-minute guided programme around the town hall, which dates back to 1837.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Huddersfield Register Office will offer customers more choice, a richer experience and a range of weddings and civil partnerships to suit all budgets and individual requirements”.

All the facilities of the previous office at High Street have been switched to the Town Hall, which means people wanting to register births and deaths will also use the new offices.

The council has yet to determine what use to make of the space used by the previous Register Office.

Clr Mary Harkin, Kirklees Cabinet member for Regeneration, Environment and Transport, said: “Weddings are occasions to remember and the new register office will provide a beautiful setting for these.

“The open day is the official opening of the new register office and I hope people will come and see what the new facilities have to offer.”

There are plans to further extend the choices offered with a planned move of Dewsbury Register Office into Dewsbury Town Hall in 2012.
