A Kirklees charity has given Kirklees residents with learning disabilities a big boost to help them live independently, after they opened their first shop in Dewsbury.

The first service of its kind to be launched by the group, it will offer advice and information for people and their families whilst out and about in the town centre, as well as providing a place for them to buy specially designed equipment.

This is as well as becoming a new hub where they can take part in a variety of inclusive activities during the day and meet new friends.

Educating Yorkshire star, Matthew Burton, was their to unveil the shop, which can be found at the junction of Church Street and Daisy Hill.

It was opened thanks to funding from KMC Community Partnerships and will initially be open Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm, although staff hope that these hours will be extended in the future.

The charity’s secretary, Jackie Bradley, said: “ The launch was extremely well attended by a number of north Kirklees councillors and people who were interested in using the service in the future.”
