Huddersfield’s new leisure centre could open earlier – to train swim stars of the future.

An application has been made to open the new centre at Springwood from 5.15am between Monday and Friday.

The original plan was to open the centre from 6am on weekdays.

But council leisure chiefs have now submitted a bid to councillors to open earlier.

They want the early-morning sessions to be available for some of the town’s top swimmers.

A spokesman for Aedas, who are behind the project, said: “Following the approval of the scheme, there has arisen the requirement for senior performance swimmers training for national and European events to access the pool.

“The number of swimmers attending the early sessions will be between 25 and 40.

The early-morning sessions will allow individuals to meet the training capacity required from British Swimming, enabling them to participate to an elite level.

“They can also fit in their training into their day prior to going to colleges, universities or places of work.”

The new £34m centre will open until 11pm on Mondays to Fridays and 10pm at weekends.

Construction is well under way on the site adjoining the ring road and engineers are busy constructing the various swimming pools that will form a key part of the centre.

The new centre is to replace the existing Sports Centre in Southgate which will be demolished to make way for a Tesco store.
