It is rising into the Huddersfield skies, quite literally, by the day.

The University of Huddersfield’s flagship Oastler Building (take a virtual tour above) is soaring above the busy ring road in the latest development on the sprawling Queensgate campus.

A giant crane and a collection of cherry-pickers are enabling workmen to put together the steel framework like a huge Meccano set.

And it is providing fascinating viewing for the thousands of drivers using Wakefield Road, Queensgate and the Shorehead roundabout each day.

The building – named after local reformer Richard Oastler – is taking shape behind and above the building site hoardings,on the corner of the campus overlooking the busy Shorehead roundabout.

The £27.5m building will be home to hundreds of staff and students at the law school and part of the school of music, humanities and media

Dozens of contractors employed by Morgan Sindall are working on the site. They spent many weeks excavating down below what was the Brunswick Building and the former university sports hall.

The new building is the latest in a series of massive construction projects for the university, which has spent more than £250m on the ever-expanding Queensgate campus.

With a turnover of £145 million, the university contributes £300 million to the local economy.

It is hoped the building will be completed by January 2017.
