A new location is being proposed for Brighouse Post Office after a planned move to its former home fell through.

The Post Office originally wanted to move from its current site in Wellington Arcade to The Old Post Office, less than 200 metres away at Park Street.

It would have meant a return to its original use for the three-storey stone building, which dates back to Victorian times.

A public consultation began, but the plan has now changed. The Post Office says the building is no longer available, and is now looking to move to a new location at Unit 1 Wellington Arcade, about 100 metres from the present site.

It has restarted the public consultation, and customers and interested parties have six weeks to comment.

The new site will have four serving positions, a mixture of one new style open-plan position, two secure fortress positions and a combi-counter, where the Post Office terminal will sit alongside the retail till.

The same range of Post Office services will remain on offer, and the new branch would open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. Currently is closes at 12.30pm on Saturdays.

A spokeswoman for the Post Office said: “This is a restart of the six week consultation period as the previous location is now unavailable. However, the new premises which is currently empty, will undergo a refurbishment to incorporate a cards & stationery retailer.”

The public consultation closes on May 31.
