An illegal immigrant has admitted growing £150,000 worth of cannabis at a Newsome property.

Vietnamese man Son Thai Nguyen pleaded guilty to being concerned in the production of the illegal class B drug.

Police found hundreds of plants when they raided the house in Barcroft Road on Saturday

Nguyen was remanded into custody to be dealt with by a crown court judge as it was revealed that he had illegally entered the country twice previously.

Prosecutor James Weekes said police attended at the property at 8.30am, acting on anonymous intelligence.

They found that the whole of the upstairs area had been converted into a cannabis farm.

A total of 240 plants and associated growing equipment was seized.

Mr Weekes told Kirklees magistrates yesterday that the estimated street value of the drugs was £150,000.

He added that although Nguyen, 28, had no previous convictions he was an illegal immigrant.

Mr Weekes said: “He has previously illegally entered the UK on two occasions. There’s a potential warrant from the UK Border Agency for his detention.”

Nguyen, of no fixed address, understood the brief proceedings with the help of a Vietnamese interpreter.

His solicitor Cheryl Ford said that the case should clearly be dealt with by a crown court.

She made no application for her client to be given bail.

Ms Ford said: “This is out of this court’s sentencing powers.

“The defendant understands he would go into immigration detention if he was given bail.”

Nguyen was remanded into custody to appear before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing on December 9.
