CARE home bosses called the police after a resident reported spotting a prowler.

As reported yesterday, police cordoned off Ashleigh Care Home in Newsome on Sunday morning but refused to say why.

The same day a resident living near the Stile Common Road home said she had seen a body being brought out.

Police said the death was unrelated to their inquiries, but the mystery deepened when police forensics officers were seen coming out of the building.

But care home manager, Sam Wallace, has now moved to clear up the confusion. Mr Wallace told the Examiner staff had called the police after someone reported an intruder.

And he said, in an unfortunate coincidence, a male resident died from a heart attack while the police were on site.

He said: “The staff on duty were concerned and they rang me and we made a decision to call the police. Police checked the building and there was no signs of any break in.

“The police did cordon off the building and the alley to the stairwell, but when a detective arrived she ordered them to remove it as it was complete overkill and was giving people the wrong impression. Unfortunately they forgot to remove the bit on the alley.

“Forensics were there because they weren’t sure if someone had got into the building. Obviously we’re dealing with residents with dementia but we still have to take it seriously.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating reports of an intruder at a care home in Newsome that was reported in the early hours of Sunday morning. Inquiries are ongoing.

"There is, however, no connection between this incident and the sudden death of a 61-year old male patient at the home later that morning.”
