PLANS for student flats which have been three years in the making have been revived.

Developer Watkin Jones wants to create student accommodation on land at Kings Mill Lane, off Somerset Road in Newsome.

They first submitted plans for the apartments, management facilities and parking in 2008, but it was turned down in March of the same year by Kirklees Council.

The firm revived the application in December 2008 – re-submitting plans for 88 student apartments at the site of the old Huddersfield University Riverside Studios at Wakefield Road/Kings Mill Lane.

It would have involved demolishing 10 houses to make way for the apartments which would house 484 students.

But in January 2009 the decision was deferred.

In June 2009 the developer was given permission subject to conditions.

Now Watkin Jones has applied to change one of those conditions.

It wants the removal of condition five, which says “all external elevations of the building(s) shall be substantially faced in natural stone”.

The case has been delegated to council officers with no date set for a decision.
