Newsome Working Men’s Club may have closed its doors last year but it is set to re-emerge triumphantly as Newsome Tap in a grand opening next month.

The historic club on St John’s Avenue which dates from 1904, shut its doors for the last time in January 2014 following a cash crisis and was subsequently put on the market for £250,000.

But a new company has been set up, Newsome WMC Ltd, and Graham Davies, a man with a good knowledge of running pubs across West Yorkshire, will welcome drinkers at noon on July 10.

Although the area has two other hostelries close to it, The Fountain and The Clarence the 36-year-old is confident there is still room for a real ale pub with occasional live bands and welcoming to families.

He said: “It’s not going to be that different to what was there before but we have modernised it a bit. We’ve given it a lick of paint, there’s new carpets and a new bar has been put in.

“I love my real ale. If all goes well I’m hoping to put a second bar in exclusively for real ale which could have 12 pumps on it.

“To start with though there will be four pumps on the bar and I will be trying to use Yorkshire breweries as far as possible. We’re a genuine free house so the choice is ours.

“The Fountain is a lovely traditional pub while The Clarence caters for the younger end of the market so we will be aiming to be somewhere in between.

“I’ve lots of contacts with bands so I’m hoping to get folk and blues bands and maybe even some reggae.

“We’re keen to encourage families to come in too so we want them to feel as welcome as possible.”

Mr Davies’ plans hinge on a licensing hearing on July 6.Several residents in the area have lodged onjections although there are no objections from local councillors or the police.

Ale should start flowing out of the pub’s pumps in just a few days’ time.
