AN ALCOHOLIC has admitted stealing from two shops.

Jade Burton, of Edale Avenue in Newsome, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

She was in custody after failing to attend on her original court date.

Magistrates were told the first offence happened on February 10 at the Marks & Spencer Simply Food store on Wakefield Road.

Burton walked into the store with a man and he took some wine while she selected some Carlsberg lager.

Both hid the alcohol in their clothes before leaving the shop.

Burton, 34, was identified via the store’s CCTV footage and police were informed.

On March 18 she and the same man, who has not been traced, went to Lockwood Service Station.

They picked up some packets of bacon, hid the items on them and then left.

Magistrates heard that some of the packets of bacon were recovered from staff but £25 worth was still outstanding.

Paul Blanchard, mitigating, said that in January Burton was made subject to court-ordered alcohol treatment. He said that she had battled a drink problem for a long time.

Mr Blanchard said: “She’s a vulnerable individual and can easily be manipulated to commit offences.”

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until May 21 and granted Burton unconditional bail.
