A NEWSOME woman has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Harriet Clarkson – or Hetty as she is more commonly known – received her letter from the Queen this weekend to commemorate a full century.

Born and bred in Newsome, Hetty Stott worked at a jewellery shop in town before leaving to work in one of the mills.

She married Crawford’s biscuit delivery man Harold Clarkson and settled in Newsome.

The pair celebrated the arrival of their son Bryan on September 3, 1938, and exactly a year later World War Two began – during which time Hetty cared for Bryan while Harold joined the fire service.

Harold died in 1990 and she also lost Bryan three years ago.

On Saturday Hetty enjoyed a special celebration with friends and family.

She is currently in Thornhill nursing home and is suffering from ill health.
