A £250,000 ultra-sterile operating theatre is being installed at Calderdale Royal hospital.

The theatre, for orthopaedic surgery, is the third to be installed at the hospital. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary also has two.

The new theatre is scheduled to be ready for surgery by next month, and the air around the operating table will be renewed 500 times an hour to lower the risk of infection.

David Wise, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and divisional director for surgery anaesthetics, said: “This extra investment is good news for the populations of Calderdale and Huddersfield. It will help support the continued development of high-quality orthopaedic surgery, specially major joint replacement, as part of the recent reconfiguration of surgical services."

After the Looking to the Future reorganisation of services, Calderdale Royal Hospital became the centre for orthopaedic surgery for the local trust.
