A HUDDERSFIELD man has attacked Kirklees Council for refusing to install Give Way signs at a junction near his home.

Trevor Sykes, of Jim Lane in Marsh, asked the council several weeks ago to install signs at the junction of Jim Lane and Broomfield Road.

They refused on the grounds that not enough people have been hurt there.

Although there are `give way' markings on the road, he claims these are not visible to drivers at night.

He also claims that many drivers miss them during the day - and fail to give way as a result.

Mr Sykes says that many cars assume they have the right of way and come through the junction at high speeds.

Kirklees Council has refused his request to install signs, saying not enough people have been injured in accidents at the junction to justify signs being erected.

However, Mr Sykes said: "How someone hasn't been killed so far is a miracle. Someone's going to be really hurt before long.

"I see cars going through there at 50mph on a regular basis and there have been many accidents there.

"But because no-one has been badly hurt, they never get reported to the police."

He said the latest accident occurred on December 16, when a car came through the junction, hit another car and mounted the pavement, smashing into a lamp-post.

Mr Sykes said: "If someone had been crossing the road at the time, they would have been killed."

A spokesman for the council's highways department said: "This junction is typical of hundreds of other crossroads in Kirklees and the UK that have `give way' markings on the road but no road signs.

"If there was a problem and accidents were severe, we would know. But the accident record, up to the end of August is good, with no personal injury accidents."

He said the December 16 crash was being investigated, but so far there was no evidence to show it could have been prevented by having Give Way signs.
