A MAJOR police operation to catch criminals on the move has already led to 123 vehicles being seized.

A so-called ring of steel has been thrown around West Yorkshire with police targeting crime hotspot areas - some in Kirklees - and using latest technology to catch criminals.

Police have also arrested 32 people since Monday for offences including car crime and burglary.

The high-intensity week of action is being fused with tactics to reduce all types of car crime in hotspot areas.

It follows the Examiner last week exclusively revealing that almost 1,000 cars were being taken off drivers found to be uninsured or having an incorrect licence in the county each month.

Officers will again be using Automatic Number Plate Recognition computers which scan registration numbers and immediately flag up those linked with crime or are uninsured or untaxed.

Police teams are targeting offenders wanted for vehicle crime, burglaries and other priority crime such as robberies.

The other element of the campaign is crime reduction.

Police Community Support Officers will be delivering leaflets relating to car crime in hotspot areas.

Det Chief Insp Keith Hallas from Kirklees CID, who is leading the campaign, said: "Criminals involved in vehicle crime in the district should be warned that there is no hiding place.

"This week we are carrying out a range of activities to deny criminals the use of our roads. Vehicles that don't have tax and drivers who don't have licenses or insurance will be stopped to face the consequences of their actions.

"Our intention is to seize these vehicles with the aim of crushing the cars that should not be on the road and depriving these criminals of their transport.

"Offenders involved in burglaries where they enter houses and steal the victim's car keys and then their vehicles have been identified and we will be targeting these offenders.

"We would also urge members of the public to take simple steps to prevent themselves becoming a victim of car crime.

"Don't leave any property on display in your vehicle, park your car in a secure car park and when at home, hide your car keys to remove the temptation for thieves.

"Crime in Kirklees will not be tolerated. We are looking forward to putting the big freeze on those involved."

A Key Safe campaign is underway with people getting two stickers - one for the car and the other for the front door - warning criminals that they keep their car keys well hidden.

Other crime prevention tips include:

* Fit a burglar alarm

* Install timer switches for lighting

* Ask neighbours to close your curtains if you are returning home late

* Fit security lighting

* Be a nosy neighbour and report anyone seen acting suspiciously
