STAFF working in the catering industry rely on tips to boost their wages.

But not those employed by Kirklees Council at the Conservatory Café in Greenhead Park.

After enjoying a midweek lunch at the new cafe, Moldgreen couple Susan and Tony Mahon were shocked to find that they were not allowed to leave a tip for the hardworking waitress.

The young staff informed them that Kirklees Council would not permit them to accept tips.

A council spokesman confirmed this in a statement: “The Conservatory Café is run by Kirklees Catering Service and the prices charged represent good value.

“Because of the nature of the service, tips are not encouraged, but staff are more than happy to receive warm thanks from satisfied customers.”

That policy is in direct contrast to the situation a few hundred yard away. The Café in the park, opposite the tennis courts, is run by Colletta’s under licence from Kirklees Council and here staff are free to accept gratuities. They even have a tip box on the counter.

Commenting on this establishment, Kirklees Council said: “There is no rule about tipping and the park café has told us they do indeed have a tips jar and encourage it.”

The spokesman added that the no-tipping rule was in line with the policy for all catering staff employed directly by Kirklees Council.

Mrs Mahon, a languages teacher who used to teach at Kirklees College, said: “We were shocked that we couldn’t leave a tip, we have never come across that before.

“The conservatory cafe was recommended by a friend.

“We went midweek on a sunny day and it was very popular, there was a group of female walkers in.

“It was an extremely pleasant experience. The food was delicious and not too expensive and the service was very good.

“The young girl who served us was charming, pleasant and helpful, in spite of being rushed off her feet.

“Frankly, I was shocked to discover that Kirklees Council do not allow staff to take tips. I worked in the Little Chef at Mirfield in my youth and relied on my tips as the wages were low.

“ I have a right to give a tip if I want. If the councillors don’t want to accept their expenses, that’s fine, but these young people, probably being paid the minimum wage, should be allowed to accept tips.

“I am disgusted with this policy and would appreciate an explanation from someone.”

The conservatory cafe opened on August 1, 2011, following a two-year £5.4m revamp of Greenhead Park. The old conservatory had fallen into disrepair and become a target for vandals.
