She is television’s most famous battleaxe, who quickly became one of the small screen’s best-loved characters.

And perhaps Nora Batty’s reputation , with her wrinkled stockings, hair rollers and fearsome frown, is putting people off buying the famous Holmfirth house where she lived in the Last of the Summer Wine series.

Nora Batty’s Cottage, which has appeared in dozens of episodes of the world’s longest-running sitcom, has now been up for sale for ten years.

And while hundreds of people from around the world have stayed at the cottage, run as self-catering accommodation, no-one has come forward to buy it since owner Neil Worthington first put it on the market in 2006 .

Neil, who runs the Worthington Brown Design business next door, bought the cottage for £80,000 in 2004.

Since then he has been swamped with people wanting to stay at the cottage in Huddersfield Road, which is best known as where Nora, played by the late Kathy Staff, would sweep the steps with her brush before swinging it at her mischief-making neighbour Compo.

Mr Worthington is not desperate to sell, and reluctantly put the cottage on the market to focus on his other businesses.

It is being marketed by Leeds-based Ernest Wilson, and has a guide price of £169,950.

The two-bedroom cottage has been totally refurbished while still retaining all its Nora Batty features, including hundreds of photos and memorabilia.

The sales particulars say: “An opportunity to acquire this world famous cottage property in the Last of the Summer Wine TV series and situated in the heart of this bustling town which attracts 1000s of tourists and visitors.

“This is the actual cottage that is filmed in the TV series. The cottage has been totally refurbished yet retaining all its main features with 100s of photos and valuable memorabilia and providing spacious superbly kept family accommodation sleeping up to 6 people comfortably. Lovely garden. Returning a rental income of £500 weekly.”

The house is also near to the other famous Summer Wine sites, including Sid's Cafe and The White Horse pub.

Mr Worthington said he was surprised the property hasn’t sold, especially with a boom in interest with the show being screened on various channels around the world.

“It is screened on channels such as Gold and that has seen interest rocket again. We get guests from America, Australia and all over, and it’s occupied about 75% of the year.”

He said while the cottage was for sale there was no risk of it being converted back into a domestic house, and he only wants to sell on the proviso it continues as the Nora Batty Cottage.

“I’m surprised it hasn’t sold, but it could be a difficult one as a lot of people won’t realise how much interest there still is in the show and how popular it is with people.

“It’s busier than ever and it would be a great little business for somebody.”
