SHOPPERS are being invited to clear out their wardrobes to boost a children’s charity.

BHS in Huddersfield is calling on people to donate their unwanted clothing to raise money for the NSPCC.

The Clothes Aid scheme is rewarding customers by offering a £5 voucher to spend in-store for every bag of clothes handed in.

The NSPCC will receive £300 for each tonne of clothing collected – equivalent to around 200 bags.

Emma Taylor, corporate fundraising manager for the NSPCC, said: “Clearing out old clothes is a great way for people to support the NSPCC.

“The charity relies on the generosity of the general public and the money raised through this fantastic promotion will help the NSPCC to continue to protect vulnerable children.”

Clothes, shoes, belts and bags are all being collected as part of the appeal, which is being run at BHS until September 30.

People are being asked to call the Clothes Aid’s helpline on 08450 722 780 to arrange a convenient collection time.

The money raised by the scheme will help make a massive difference to the lives of children and young people in Huddersfield and across the UK, by funding ChildLine counsellors or by enabling the NSPCC to answer more calls from adults with concerns about children.

It will also help the charity develop its services for children who have suffered abuse and harm.

The scheme comes after a recent WRAP report found the average UK household owned around £4,000 worth of clothing with almost a third of it not been worn in the last year.

An estimated £140 million worth – around 350,000 tonnes – of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year, creating a huge amount of unnecessary waste.

It is hoped the campaign will also help the environment at the same time as benefiting the cause.

Since 2006, BHS has raised more than £1m for the NSPCC.
