A nurse faces being struck off after assaulting her young son.

Staff at the six-year-old’s school alerted police after the child attended with bruising to his face.

His mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she snapped after suffering pressure at work.

The mum-of-two pleaded guilty to assault at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge Michael Fanning told her: “A child has to be protected by the parent, not abused.

“What you’ve done is child abuse.”

The incident happened at the family’s home in the Dewsbury area on July 1.

The mother had collected her two children from school and the pair were squabbling.

By the time they had reached their home the children were scuffling and their mother snapped.

She hit her son hard three times on each side of his face.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said: “He attended at school with some facial bruising and as a result of that enquiries were made by the safeguarding officer at the school.

“A teacher also noticed the injuries and police became involved.”

The child was examined in hospital where he was found to have bruising to his ear and cheeks after being hit six times.

Social services became involved and the boy is now living with his father at a separate address.

Mohammed Arif, mitigating, said that his client recently remarried and there was some rivalry between her two children.

He described her as a caring mum but her work as a nurse had taken its toll on her.

Mr Arif told the court: “No doubt stress and fatigue has caused her to snap.

“She’s now receiving counselling (but) it’s the end of her career today.”

Judge Fanning said that while he accepted that the abuse was a one- off, medical evidence showed that the blows on the boy were heavy.

He ordered a full report ahead of the mum’s sentencing on October 30.
