A nurse has been cautioned after she moved a frail woman who had fallen out of bed and broken her leg.

Mamello Herring has been warned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) but has escaped suspension.

She was brought before the NMC after an incident at Woodlands Care Home in Mirfield in September, 2013.

Ms Herring was about to hoist a woman from her bed when the patient fell to the floor, fracturing her leg.

But instead of checking for injuries or calling for help, Ms Herring lifted her from the floor back into bed, using the hoist.

The woman was later admitted to hospital after a second nurse found out about the fall and rang for an ambulance.

Ms Herring was also accused of failing to check the woman within an hour of the fall and not documenting the incident.

She admitted all charges.

The incident occurred just four months after Ms Herring qualified as nurse.

The NMC acknowledged that she had undertaken further training and expressed remorse over the incident.

Ms Herring was dismissed by the home in November 2013 but has found new employment where she has continued for 17 months without incident.

In light of the single error on one shift the NMC issued a caution order for three years, which must be disclosed to employers.

Woodlands Care Home is currently rated as “inadequate” the Care Quality Commission.
