A FIRE at a day nursery today forced children and staff to evacuate the building.

Ten children and five staff from the Kinder Castle Day Nursery in New North Road, Huddersfield, had to leave at about 7.50am after a member of staff smelled smoke.

Two crews from Huddersfield fire station went to the scene.

They found that a central heating boiler in the basement of the two- storey stone building was well alight.

The firefighters used dry powder extinguishers to put out the blaze.

The firefighters' Crew Manager, Edward Beaumont, said that as soon as the member of staff had smelled the smoke the children and nursery staff immediately carried out their emergency procedures.
