A PLAN to extend a nursery has been approved - despite objections from people living nearby.
The nursery, in Boxhall Road, Elland, will be extended to house a Sure Start children's centre.
People who live near the nursery, which is linked to Elland C of E Junior and Infant School, had objected to the plan.
Calderdale Council had received 10 letters, as well as a 111-name petition against the extension.
Worries about the plan included parking problems and a possible increase in traffic, the loss of a playing field and views being spoiled for nearby houses.
But councillors at a planning committee meeting gave the plan the go-ahead.
The site was chosen because it is in a very deprived area and would benefit those children most in need.
Sure Start early years child care manager Michelle Pearson said the decision was great news for all the community.
She added: "This is a good site, because it can link with the present nursery and school and make a real difference to the children.
"There will be lots of things happening at the children's centre, from citizens' advice appointments to adult classes. It will become the hub of the community."
