AN elderly woman fought off youths who tried to steal her bag in Newsome.
The 71-year-old woman was walking on Newsome Road at 5.10pm on Wednesday when three youths wearing hoodies came up behind her.
Two of the boys, in their early teens, distracted her while the third tried to grab her handbag, but the woman clutched onto it tightly and refused to give it up.
The boys were scared away by a passer-by and ran off down Tunnacliffe Road.
As they ran the woman slipped and fell on the pavement. She suffered minor injuries but did not need hospital treatment.
Police are appealing for the woman who scared the boys to come forward.
