HUDDERSFIELD-born former bishop David Bonser has died.

The 71-year-old died at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, on March 21.

He was Bishop of Bolton from 1991 to 1999.

He studied at Manchester University and joined the Anglican Church in the 1960s.

He served the Manchester diocese for more than 30 years, both professionally and with fund- raising efforts.

He was Rector of St Clement's Church in Chorlton for 14 years and was also the Bishop of Manchester's ecumenical adviser.

In 1982, he was appointed Archdeacon and Team Rector of Rochdale, before becoming Bishop of Bolton.

In 1999, he retired to Rochdale, where he lived with his wife, Shirley, a primary school teacher.

She died last year.

The couple had three children and two grandchildren.

The bishop's funeral was held today at St Aidan's Church at Sudden in Marland, Rochdale.
