RETIRED greengrocer and great supporter of the local community Dorothy Brook died peacefully, aged 81, in the White Rose Nursing Home, Holmfirth.

Mrs Brook (nee Addy) devoted much of her life to working as an independent greengrocer.

She was born at Throstle Nest, Marsden, and attended the local Marsden schools before taking her first job was as a printer at Thornton & Ross in Linthwaite.

She was a regular attender of Marsden Church and a member of Marsden Operatic Society, taking part in many shows.

She got a job in the local greengrocer’s at Greensend Road. Years later she took over the business and in 1976 moved it to Holmfirth. There she continued to trade as Dorothy’s at Huddersfield Road until 1984 when she then handed the business over to her son and it became known as Andrew’s.

Mrs Brook was a tireless worker for Hinchliffe Mill Brass Band and was treasurer for many years.

Following her move to Holmfirth she became a regular attender at the Parish church, where she was also well known for organising whist drives.

Her love of whist took her on many holidays playing cards.

For many years she supported Harden Moss Sheep Dog Trials, where she raised money through her famous tombola.

She also enjoyed the company and fellowship of several Women’s Institutes, which also took her on many holidays.

She leaves a son Andrew, daughter-in-law Alison and grandsons Christopher, Alexander and Jonathan.
