She was a woman who devoted her life to helping the community.

And tributes poured in for Mrs Dorothy Lindley, of Station Road, Marsden, who had worked tirelessly for countless local groups and organisations.

Her daughter Mrs Yvonne Talbot summed it up: “Her heart was the community and the community was in her heart.

“She wanted to help with anything and everything and she would help absolutely anyone”.

Mrs Lindley, 79, was born in Booth, Slaithwaite, but moved to Marsden as a youngster and went to school in the village.

She left school for a job at Montgomery Photographers in Huddersfield but then moved to work in the office at Crowther Bruce’s Marsden textile mill.

She married her husband, Brian Lindley in 1953 but he died 26 years ago.

The couple have two daughters, Dianne and Yvonne, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs Lindley served as a councillor with Kirklees Council for two spells, the first as a Conservative and the second as an independent.

She was also involved with many local organisations and societies.

They included Marsden Enhancement Society, with which was still involved up to her death.

She also worked tirelessly for the likes of Marsden Festival, the Mechanics Hall Committee and the RNLI, setting up the Marsden branch.

Mrs Talbot said: “She spent virtually every day working for others.

“But when she did have time for herself, she loved to go horse racing and also enjoyed making at least two visits a year to Blackpool”.

A funeral service took place yesterday at Marsden Parish Church.
