A MAN who coached hundreds of young badminton players in Huddersfield has died.

Ian Broadbent, 60, of Kirkheaton, died at his home after a short illness.

Mr Broadbent spent more than 20 years playing and coaching in the sport he loved.

He coached alongside Graham and Linda Howe for many years at the Newsome High School and Sports College.

He also took on the role as team manager for the Huddersfield Juniors squad and took them to badminton tournaments around the country.

Many of his protégés became successful in the sport and some are now playing at county and national level.

Mr Broadbent was also a member of the Huddersfield Badminton League committee for a number of years, representing the junior section.

His wife, Ann, was a keen player, as are his two daughters, Emma and Sarah.

A funeral service took place yesterday at Huddersfield Crematorium, when a collection was taken for Cancer Research.
