FORMER detective Kenneth O'Loughlin was affectionately known as Big Mick during his many years in CID.

The 6ft former Irish Guardsman spent most of his 30-year police career in Huddersfield CID after his first five years in uniform.

He completed his training on May 1, 1948 - the day he married his wife, Valerie, at Christ Church, Linthwaite.

Mr O'Loughlin served for 30 years and was a detective sergeant when he retired in 1978.

He then spent 13 years as a security guard at Morley catalogue company GUS.

He was born in Hull and evacuated to Almondbury during the Second World War after the port became a target for German bombers.

He joined the Irish Guards in 1944 and served in Germany in 1946 in the immediate aftermath of the war and then for 12 months in Palestine.

Mr and Mrs O'Loughlin were members of the International Police Association.

Mr O'Loughlin had suffered health problems in more recent years and was 78 when he died.

He lived at Crosland Hill with Valerie and leaves a son, Stephen, a daughter, Karen, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
