SHE was a familiar face behind the counter of a Mirfield shop for years.

Mrs Betty Lister, who has died at the age of 80, ran Lister's stationery and DIY stores in Mirfield and Batley with her husband, John, for 38 years.

The couple, who had married in September, 1947, finally retired 15 years ago.

Mrs Lister, who was born in Batley, spent more than 28 years in Mirfield and was heavily involved in the local community.

She was a member of Mirfield Inner Wheel for 20 years and served as president twice.

She was a vice-chairman of the Hospital League of Friends and did a lot of voluntary work.

John recalled: "Betty was always busy, always up to something or involved in a group.

"She loved decorating cakes - especially wedding cakes - and she decorated Easter eggs with children's names."

The couple lived in Oddfellows Street, Mirfield, and had three children, Richard Alan, James Christopher and Margaret. They also had seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr and Mrs Lister enjoyed travelling after their retirement.

Mrs Lister's funeral was at Dewsbury Crematorium.
