A FORMER president and chairman of the old Lockwood Cricket Club, Roy Tinsley, has died at the age of 76.

Mr Tinsley, a former compositor with the Examiner before moving to Shipley where he ran his own printing business, first played for the Birks Bottom club back in 1948, but later held the offices of chairman and president, and helped save the club from extinction during the 1980s.

He also played, and was president, at Farsley Cricket Club in the Bradford League, and was a close friend of the late Yorkshire cricketer Phil Carrick, who came up through the junior ranks there when Mr Tinsley was president.

As well as serving the Lockwood club for many years, Mr Tinsley also helped boost the playing staff when his own two sons Stephen and Gary joined the club, whose headquarters were where Huddersfield Rugby Union Club now have their First and Second team and hockey pitches.

Mr Tinsley, who also spent several years late in his career playing in the Huddersfield Evening League with the Examiner, died in Leeds General Infirmary.

He leaves four children: Gary, Stephen, Carol and Chris.
