A MIRFIELD man has died – less than three months after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Mr Joe Hannam celebrated his birthday in March with a big party in Mirfield.

He was best known for his work with Kirkwood Hospice – and at one point was the oldest hospice volunteer in the country.

In 2002, aged 89, he was rewarded for his commitment to the hospice when he was invited to a Buckingham Palace garden party to meet the Queen.

Mr Hannam, whose son Peter, 66, was pastor at Huddersfield Elim Church for 30 years, was born and brought up in Morley, near Leeds.

He spent most of his working life in the textile industry.

He started out as a weaver but progressed to be a buyer. He sourced raw materials and travelled the world.

Mr Hannam also volunteered for the St John Ambulance Brigade.

As well as Peter, who lives in Birkby, he leaves a daughter Mollie, 69, and two grandchildren Bethany, 34, and Philip, 32, an assistant pastor in Chelmsford.

Bethany has a five-month-old daughter Eva.

In the past, Mr Hannam earned a good citizen award from a local newspaper.

He was a regular worshipper at Trinity Church in Mirfield and was the oldest member of the congregation.
