A Huddersfield woman who made her way in a man’s world has died.
Miss Mary Ward, 91, of Birchencliffe, died in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on May 28.
Miss Ward made her name as the first female stockbroker in Huddersfield and one of the first in the region.
She was born and brought up in Linthwaite and studied at Central Kayes College in New North Road, Edgerton.
She had a job in an office in Britannia Buildings but then joined the Huddersfield stockbroking firm of A Dawson and Co, who had premises in Standard House.
She remained with the firm for many years and eventually became a partner. She was qualified to work at the Stock Exchange but preferred to conduct most of her business in her Huddersfield office.
Miss Ward was a long-serving worshipper at St Patrick’s RC Church in Huddersfield.
She was a member of the Huddersfield Business and Professional Women’s Club and served for many years with the League of Hospital Friends, pushing a library trolley around the wards of the Royal Infirmary.
She leaves a sister, Margaret.
A funeral service takes place today at St Patrick’s Church.
