SHE was one of the leading lights in Huddersfield Thespians for more than half a century.

But now Mrs Enid Luty has died at the age of 83.

Mrs Luty, of Birkby, a former president of the Thespians, had joined the group in 1954 and went on to play a key role in countless productions.

She was born in Huddersfield on August 3, 1928, to Harry and Nellie Brook, of Beaumont Park. She was educated at Wentworth School and later at Huddersfield School of Art.

She excelled as a youngster at ballet but her small stature precluded any long-term future in dance.

Mrs Luty began work as a textile designer at Storeys in Lancaster, but moved back to Huddersfield in the 1950s.

She married Frank Luty after meeting him at the Thespians, and the couple went on to have two sons, Simon and Adrian.

They had been living in Manningham, Bradford, where Mr Luty worked for a subsidiary of John Crowther and Sons but then moved back to Huddersfield and bought a house in Birkby Hall Road.

Mrs Luty served as wardrobe mistress for the Thespians for more than 25 years and also held the post of general secretary as well as president during her long association. She appeared in shows as an actress and worked on many others as a director.

During the 1960s and 1970s she worked part-time as a peripatetic teacher of drama with another Thespians stalwart, Georgie Taylor, in Huddersfield schools including Deighton and Salendine Nook.

She also later worked at the Odsal House School for Deaf Children in Bradford.

Mrs Luty devoted a great deal of time and effort to fundraising for many different causes.

She was a member of the Birkby Ladies since 1973, she was a fundraiser for Huddersfield Conservatives and also founded the Phoenix Group, which raised thousands of pounds for good causes.

She was a key supporter of the Huddersfield Hospital Friends group, pushing the library trolley from ward to ward.

A funeral service takes place at Huddersfield Crematorium on Monday, January 30, at 1pm.
