OFFENDERS have been helping to repair dry stone walls in the Colne Valley.

People in unpaid working teams run by the Probation Service have been repairing sections of walling on paths from Knowl Road to St John's Primary School in Golcar.

They worked every Wednesday during September, under supervision from experts.

The project is part of a new regeneration scheme piloted by Kirklees Council's Colne Valley Area Committee, which has also put £6,000 towards resurfacing a pathway.

All the work should be completed by Christmas.

Clr Robert Iredale, who deals with transport on the committee, said: "I am very excited by the success of this project.

"The community had identified this particular path as one they wanted brought back up to standard so that people would use it more.

"It really is a good arrangement for everyone. The community has got a pathway upgraded and members of the working party have picked up skills and experience.

"I heard that one worker enjoyed the experience so much they said they wouldn't mind taking it up as a profession. That is very encouraging."
