Football fans smashed up a town centre taxi office after violence flared in the wake of Huddersfield Town’s derby defeat to arch rivals Leeds United.

Town fans were said to have surrounded the offices of GT Taxis in Lord Street as a group of Leeds supporters sat inside waiting for a minibus taxi.

A crowd of up to 30 Town supporters gathered outside baiting the Leeds fans inside.

The gang outside hurled a wooden stool at the offices, smashing windows. Glasses were also thrown at the building, covering the pavement and floor with shards.

Around 20 police officers attended to calm the scene and arrests were made.

Taxi firm boss Amarjit Singh, 50, said at least £2,000 damage had been caused to the offices.

He spoke of his shock and said: “Nothing like this has ever happened before.

“I have run this business since 2000 and we have a good reputation.”

The attack happened at about 5.10pm on Saturday, just hours after Town’s 3-0 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Mr Singh was taking passengers to Scapegoat Hill when he heard of the trouble over the radio.

“When I got back the police were outside and I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“It was only late afternoon and it was raining and the town centre was still busy with people. There were old people waiting at the bus stop and kids around and people wanting a taxi home. It’s terrible.

“It’s only a football match. Why does it matter who wins?

The drama was captured on the firm’s CCTV and passers-by also recorded what happened on mobile phones.

The taxi firm has handed the footage to police.

Mr Singh said the eight or 10 Leeds fans were sat on benches in the office and were in good spirits when a couple of Town fans came past and spotted them.

More Town supporters came out to join them and violence erupted.

“The Leeds fans had done nothing and didn’t go outside,” he said. “They threw the benches out of the door but I think that was more to protect themselves.”

Mr Singh said it took until 9.30pm for him and his staff to clean up the office and put plastic sheeting over the windows.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said there had been an “altercation” between Leeds and Town fans at GT Taxis and windows were broken.

“Two people – both Town fans – were arrested for public order offences and both have been charged and bailed,” she said.
