A HUDDERSFIELD street went green today - and there wasn't a spot of mud in sight.

A large chunk of Byram Street in the town centre - 80ft by 30ft - has been turfed over.

The stunt is part of an attention- grabbing weekend, showing what the town centre could be like if pedestrians were put first.

The three-day event is also featuring street theatre, music, dancing and an outdoor cafe.

The company that laid the turf has revealed it's a crafty new invention - mudless grass.

Stephen Fell, managing director of Lindum Turf, near York, said: "We grow the grass in fields, wash all the soil off the turf and then grow it into a special felt carpet that is incredibly strong."

The grass can take a lot of hammer - and will have to, with thousands of people expected to walk on it between now and Monday night, when it is taken up and Byram Street returns to normal.
